You predict a correct score by estimating how many goals each team is likely to score, then working out which exact scoreline that combination produces most often. The practical version: take each team's average goals scored and conceded over its last 15 to 20 matches, adjust for home advantage, and you get an expected goals figure for each side, say 1.4 for the home team and 0.9 for the away team. Feed those two numbers into a Poisson calculator (free ones are everywhere online) and it returns a probability for every scoreline. In that example the most likely result is 1-0, at roughly 14%, followed by 1-1 and 0-0. That's your correct score prediction: the top of the list, and you should know before you bet that even the top of the list usually sits under 20%.
That last point is the one most people skip, so I'll come back to it.
Step one: get an expected goals number for each team
You need four averages, all from the same window of recent matches. I use the last 15; 20 is fine, 5 is useless.
Home team's average goals scored at home. Home team's average goals conceded at home. Away team's average goals scored away. Away team's average goals conceded away.
Splitting home and away matters more than people think. Plenty of sides score twice a game at home and barely once on the road.
Then estimate each team's goals for this match. The simplest honest way: home expected goals is the average of "what the home team scores at home" and "what the away team concedes away". Away expected goals is the average of "what the away team scores away" and "what the home team concedes at home". If the home side scores 1.8 at home and the visitors concede 1.2 away, the home expectation is 1.5. If the visitors score 0.9 away and the hosts concede 0.8 at home, the away expectation is 0.85.
That's crude. Proper models weight by league average and strength of opposition. But crude and consistent beats sophisticated and abandoned after a week, and for the correct score market the crude version gets you most of the way.
Step two: turn two numbers into a scoreline
Goals in football are close to Poisson-distributed, which is a fancy way of saying that if a team is expected to score 1.5, you can calculate the chance of it scoring exactly 0, 1, 2, 3 and so on. Multiply the home team's chance of scoring X by the away team's chance of scoring Y and you get the probability of the scoreline X-Y.
You don't need to do the maths by hand. Search "Poisson football calculator", enter 1.5 and 0.85, and read the grid.
For that pair of numbers, the grid will look something like this: 1-0 around 14%, 1-1 around 12%, 2-0 around 11%, 0-0 around 10%, 2-1 around 9%. Everything else is smaller.
Now compare those figures with the bookmaker's correct score odds. A 1-0 priced at 7.00 implies about 14.3%. If your calculation says 14%, there's no edge; the bookmaker has done the same sum. If the bookmaker has 1-0 at 8.50 (11.8%) and you make it 14%, that's a bet. It's rarely that clean, but that's the comparison you're looking for every time.
Why the odds on correct score look so generous
Because no single scoreline is likely. In an evenly matched game the most probable result is often 1-1 at around 12%, which means it fails 88% of the time. Bookmakers price 1-1 in that kind of match somewhere around 6.00 to 7.00, which looks like a big payout until you remember you're going to lose seven bets in eight.
Correct score is a high-variance market. It rewards patience and small, level stakes. It punishes anyone who raises the stake after a run of losses, which in this market can easily be ten or twelve in a row even when your numbers are right.
Shortcuts that actually hold up
Low-scoring teams point to 1-0, 0-0 and 1-1. If both expected goals figures are under 1.2, those three scorelines cover about a third of the outcomes between them.
Strong favourite at home against a side that concedes freely: 2-0 and 2-1 rise, and 3-0 becomes live. Don't go higher than 3-1 unless the expected goals for the favourite is above 2.5, which is rare outside the very top clubs.
Two attacking sides with poor defences: 2-1 and 2-2 lead, but the spread is wide and the market is hard to beat. I mostly pass on these.
Cup ties and derbies: goals tend to drop. Shade your expected goals down by around 10 to 15% and the scoreline list shifts toward 1-0 and 1-1.
What to ignore
Head-to-head history. Two clubs having played out three 2-2 draws in the past four years tells you nothing about Saturday. The teams, managers and half the squad have changed.
"Sure" correct score tips. Anyone claiming a fixed or guaranteed scoreline is lying. The mathematics above are the ceiling of what's knowable, and the ceiling is a 15 to 20% chance on the best pick.
Late line-up changes you haven't checked. A first-choice striker missing takes 0.2 to 0.3 off a team's expected goals, which is enough to move 2-1 down and 1-1 up the list. Check the team sheet an hour before kick-off.
A quick example, start to finish
Home side: 1.7 scored and 0.9 conceded at home over 15 games. Away side: 1.0 scored and 1.3 conceded away over 15 games.
Home expected goals: (1.7 + 1.3) / 2 = 1.5. Away expected goals: (1.0 + 0.9) / 2 = 0.95.
Poisson grid: 1-0 about 13%, 1-1 about 12%, 2-0 about 10%, 2-1 about 9%, 0-0 about 9%.
Bookmaker offers 1-0 at 7.00 (14.3%), 1-1 at 6.50 (15.4%), 2-1 at 12.00 (8.3%). The 1-0 and 1-1 are both priced as more likely than my numbers say, so I leave them. The 2-1 at 12.00 against my 9% is the only price with anything in it, and even then it's thin. Small stake or no bet.
That's a normal outcome. Most matches give you nothing in this market. The discipline is in passing on them.
