Football Betting Glossary Every Betting Term You Need to Know — Explained Simply

Football betting has its own language. If you're new to betting — or even if you've been at it a while — there are probably terms you've seen but never fully understood. This glossary covers every major football betting term clearly and without jargon.

Core Betting Terms

1X2 — The basic match result market. 1 = home win. X = draw. 2 = away win. The most common bet in football.

Accumulator (Acca) — A single bet combining multiple selections. All must win for the bet to pay out. Odds multiply, so returns can be large. See our accumulator of the day for daily pre-built accas.

Asian Handicap — A market that removes the draw by giving one team a virtual head start. A -1 handicap means the favoured team must win by 2 goals. Eliminates the possibility of a push on the draw.

Banker — A selection you are highly confident in. Often used as the anchor of an accumulator.

Bookmaker (Bookie) — The company you place bets with. Examples include Bet9ja, SportyBet, and BetKing.

Goals Market Terms

Over 2.5 Goals — The total goals scored must be 3 or more. A 2-1 result wins. A 1-1 does not. See our over 2.5 predictions.

Under 2.5 Goals — The total goals must be 2 or fewer. A 1-0 or 0-0 wins. A 2-1 does not. See our under 2.5 tips.

Under 3.5 Goals — Total goals must be 3 or fewer. More forgiving than under 2.5. See our under 3.5 predictions.

BTTS (Both Teams To Score) — Both teams must score at least once. The result doesn't matter — a 1-1, 2-1, or 1-3 all win BTTS. A 1-0 does not because one team didn't score.

First Half Goals (FH Over 0.5) — A goal must be scored in the first half. See our first half goals predictions.

Other Common Terms

Double Chance — Covers two of the three match outcomes. Home/draw, away/draw, or home/away. Lower odds but higher chance of winning.

Draw No Bet (DNB) — If the match is a draw your stake is returned. You only lose if the other team wins.

Handicap — One team is given a virtual advantage or disadvantage to level the playing field. Positive handicap helps the underdog, negative hurts the favourite.

Odds — The price at which a bookmaker will pay out on a bet. Decimal odds of 2.00 mean a 1,000 naira stake returns 2,000 naira total (1,000 profit).

Stake — The amount of money you bet.

Value Bet — A bet where the odds offered by the bookmaker are higher than the true probability of the outcome. See our value bets today page.

Void Bet — A bet that is cancelled, usually due to a postponed match or a rule 4 deduction. Your stake is returned.
